On December 11, 2019, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), with the support of USAID’s Research Technical Assistance Center, hosted a convening, “Using Research to Advance International Development: Women’s Empowerment as a Case Study” with the Center for Development Research. Held at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC, the event brought together over 65 researchers, donors, policymakers, and implementing partners.
Experts in women’s empowerment from the digital/technology, education, entrepreneurship, and health sectors discussed and debated challenges in getting evidence used and explored potential solutions for promoting the use of research in the field of development.
Women’s empowerment served as the overarching lens for the convening, which included four lightning talk presentations. These dynamic presentations highlighted opportunities where the use of policy- and programmatically-relevant research can help improve the lives and status of women in developing countries.
In advance of the day-long convening, leading scholars from the RTAC network and implementing partners collaboratively developed four short case study papers for each sector and an overarching framing paper focused on the state of the art in research utilization in international development.
Please note that USAID’s Research Technical Assistance Center (RTAC) has concluded. The RTAC website will be decommissioned in the next few months. Some materials will be transferred to the NORC website and the USAID Learning Lab website in the coming weeks. However, we recommend downloading any materials you would like to preserve at this time.
